In 2004, MTV launched its EXIT campaign, which stands for End Exploitation and Trafficking. The purpose of the campaign was to educate and empower young people all over the world to protect themselves from falling victims to human trafficking and modern day slavery. It was also a call to raise awareness and get involved in the movement to end enslavement and trafficking of people.
Since then, many programs were developed and many events took place to accomplish this purpose, and the work still continues. Recent reports estimate that 2.5 million people are trafficked annually, and over half of them are in Asia. MTV EXIT campaign uses the pop culture of the countries that are sources and destinations for human trafficking to spread the message of awareness and prevention of modern day slavery. These events feature national celebrities and musicians and include free concerts to promote awareness about the issue. Additionally, the campaign seeks to encourage young people to get involved with local non-profit organizations that work to end human trafficking, to follow the progress of the local governments on the issue, and to support products made without using forced and slave labor. Moreover, the campaign does not accept donations but encourages support of the local anti-human trafficking organizations.
Human trafficking and modern day slavery are global issues as well, and MTV EXIT campaign recruits well-known celebrities, such as Lucy Liu, Angelina Jolie, former Miss Universe Lara Dutta, and many others to convey its message. Additionally, many survivors of human trafficking shared their stories and contributed to the documentaries featured on the campaign’s website.
MTV is a huge part of the global modern pop culture, and its campaign to raise awareness about human trafficking and modern day slavery has a potential to reach many people. The EXIT campaign uses modern technology and media to educate and encourage young people to join the fight to stop and prevent human trafficking.
